After facing the court for allegedly attempting to kill Dexter Johnson, 27-year-old Chaka Chase and 18- year-old Keon Niles were both asked to post bail in the sum of $300,000 when they appeared before Magistrate Sueanna Lovell yesterday.
They had previously appeared before Acting Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine -Beharry.
The duo had been remanded since early November when they were charged for unlawfully and maliciously wounding Dexter Johnson with the intent to kill him. The men who were unrepresented at the time are still not required to plead to the indictable charge against them.
The defendants appeared on this occasion to hear the date given for the commencement of their preliminary inquiry (PI). At the same time Defence Attorney Gordon Gilhuys made a bail application on behalf of his clients. The lawyer’s submission was forwarded when the magistrate granted the men pre-trial liberty with stipulations.
According to the prosecution, Chase and Niles shot Johnson during the morning hours while the man was taking his motorcycle to a repair shop.
They had approached him and pointed handguns. The prosecutor stated that the man became afraid, dropped his cycle and began running. He was subsequently shot in his lower abdomen and was taken to the hospital by public spirited persons. The men were remanded after their first appearance.
Amidst the allegations made by the victim, the defendants’ families are claiming absolute ignorance on the part of those charged. They are also asking the police to investigate the criminal nature of the Johnson family. Dexter Johnson is the husband of Sandra Johnson also known as Sandra Duncan and the father of 17-year-old Osafo Johnson, who was shot twice in the back by police ranks in July last year.
Chase and Niles are expected back in court on January 23.
