With teams affiliated to the Georgetown Football Association (GFA) out of the Kashif & Shanghai annual yearend extravaganza and with all the best players in the City readily available, the focus will now switch to the Banks Beer Knockout Cup which kicks off today with a double header under floodlights, at the GFC ground.
In the opening encounter, the youthful and enterprising Fruta Conquerors takes on Police FC from 18:00hrs and that will be followed by the feature clash that involves Sunburst Camptown and the rapidly improving Northern Rangers from 20:00 hrs.
The first game is anticipated to set the tone for the competition when the in-form Fruta Conquerors with the likes of the dazzling Pernell Schultz, the efficient Trevon Lythcott and the bright goalkeeping prospect Colin Edwards in their line-up take to the field to showcase their skills.
They will have as support the services of the ice-cool Eon Alleyne, Jermain Junor and Marco Marcus to boost their chances of advancing in the Cup.
On the other hand, Police, though, not possessing the calibre of players at least on paper to match Conquerors has strung together some decent performances of late and underestimating them could prove perilous to the opposition.
Among those expected to appear for the Lawmen are Alistair Thomas, Kwame Hyman, Sherwin Grant, Terrence Brown and Orville Pedro and all these players have shown grit and determination in previous engagements and getting past them will be a difficult task.
In the feature contest, seasoned campaigner Camptown will definitely start as favourites since many of their players are experienced, especially in these types of competitions, while they are no strangers to playing at the highest level.
Inspirational leader Troy Prescod will once again have to lead from the front and everyone in football circles know of his pedigree, while Peter Parks, Lance Ralston, Devon Forde, Leon Muir and Rishawn Sandiford are all savvy players at this level who thrive in knockout competitions.
Prescod will no doubt try to weave his magic in mid-field, while Parks, who has been in a rich vein of form, will be aiming to apply severe pressure on the opposition backline.
In terms of experience Camptown holds a decisive edge, but as we’ve seen at every level in this sport, the game is not won on paper, but rather on the field.
The Rangers have grown in stature and confidence over the past three months and players such as Anthony Sancho, Devon Bowen, Simon Emanuel, Gavin Bobb and Mark Trotman have all improved, while the experienced Sherwin Vincent has returned and has already shown his quality and value to the team so fans should not be surprised if this encounter goes right down to the wire.
With over $4million up for grabs, the initiative and love expressed by the GFA to go in search of sponsors to compensate the loyal ball-weavers at Christmas time should be appreciated and supported by all football loving fans.
It will also present an opportunity for the buffs and scouts to spot the next cadre of players who could be drawn into the senior ‘Golden Jaguars’ line-up.
