Executives of the Guyana Chess Federation are continuing their bid to popularize the sport throughout the country and to this effect will be staging a one-day, two tiered, rapid chess tournament this Sunday December 11 at the UG Tain Campus, Corentyne.
The tournament will be contested among junior and senior male and female chess players from Berbice and other parts of the country.
The competition consists of seven rounds and coordinator of the Tain Campus, John London is one of the main persons responsible for organizing the event. The University administrator pointed out the involvement of all citizens in the sport would act as the catalyst towards an improved society. He also emphasized the need for young people to learn the sport towards a similar accomplishment.
President of the Guyana Chess Federation Shiv Nandalall acknowledged Mr. London’s views while reiterating that his organization’s main focus is the development of young people.
Neal & Massy Security Solutions (NMSS) is the sole sponsor of the tournament which consists of seven rounds each in the junior and senior category.
The players would compete for trophies, cash and chess sets among other prizes while reading material on the intricacies of the sport would be distributed to the junior participants.
Registration begins at 9:30hrs at the venue on competition day and Mr. Nandalall is urging participants to go to the venue early to facilitate a prompt start. The registration fee is $300 for juniors and $500 for seniors. Players would each have 20 minutes for each round to complete their game. Each round lasts a maximum 40 minutes. The Federation would be providing chess clocks for the tournament and players with tournament size chess sets can bring those along.
