The Japan Karate Association/World Federation Guyana recently held their
3rd and final grading exercise for 2011. This was conducted in two parts for the first time, where 45 students from the Headquarters Dojo, National Park, Thomas Lands were Graded on November 26 at the National Park Karate Benab and 36 students from the Canje and Port Mourant Dojo’s merged and were Graded on December 5 at the Port Mourant Community Centre.
Both Grading exercises were well attended, as parents and other curious onlookers came out in numbers, especially at Port Mourant where the event was held for the first time. A special training clinic was also conducted at the Port Mourant Dojo afterwards.
Twenty students were graded for the first time, moving from white belt to yellow, ten moved from 9KYU (1st yellow) to 8KYU (2nd yellow), nine were promoted from yellow to orange and eight from orange to green.
In the intermediate ranks, six students moved from green to purple, seven moved from 5th KYU (1st purple) to 4th KYU (2nd purple).
The advance ranks produced exceptional performances; nine students were promoted to 3KYU brown belt, three from Georgetown and the other six were the first batch from Berbice to attain brown belt ranking.
As the ranking advanced, three students were promoted to 2nd KYU brown belt, three moved to 1B KYU Brown belt, and six attained 1st KYU Brown belt. The following six 1st KYU brown belts; Shaun Singh, Xavier Arjoon, Timothy Chand, Stephen Bhola, Isaac Plummer, and Shaqueel Amin will now be required to train a minimum of six months before they can attempt to take their First Dan Black Belt Testing.
After both grading exercises, Chief Instructor Sensei Christopher Chaves, Sensei Marvin Singh, Sensei Neville Holder, Mrs. Stephanie Kerry, Mr. Marlon George, Mr. Shermon Kyte and Mrs. Christina Chaves, all members of JKA/WF Guyana Operating Committee met with students and parents.
The focal point of the meeting was to discuss the JKA/WF America 2012 Camp and Tournament, which will be held June 7-10, 2012 in Panama City, Panama. JKA/WF Guyana has plans enter a team at this international event.
Students and parents were informed about plans, suggestions were taken and all members agreed to start preparations from January 2012 for this event. Expectations are high, since JKA/WF Guyana secured 8 gold, 7 silver, and 6 bronze medals at the last JKA/WF Americas Tournament which was held in June of this year in Santa Fe, New Mexico.
Sensei Chaves (4th Dan) encouraged students from all three locations to continue attending classes regularly as there is no substitute for training. The next grading is scheduled for March 31, 2012.
