Dear Editor,
I am more than concerned; I am annoyed with GECOM’s lack of transparency in the compilation and release of the Guyana 2011 election results. It took so long to publish some of it and what is published is not even accurate.
The oral declaration on Thursday that I listened to on television is different in some ways from the printed results in some press, notably Caribbean election.com, Stabroek News, and Kaieteur News.
GECOM’s computation is wrong for the general elections. The valid votes for Region Two are given as 17,934. But the APNU – 3254; AFC-2159; PPP/C-12,450; TUF- 69 add up to 17,932.
There are other examples lacking numeracy skills. It cannot be that they sacrificed expediency for accuracy after all the spouting.
In Regions Four and Ten where, I believe, the greatest machinations and manipulations were perpetrated 63,299 persons are said not to have voted and here is where most of the SOP’s are not accounted for.
In Region Ten the figures given are: valid votes- 15,584; APNU-11,353; AFC- 1,324; PPP/C-2, 868; TUF-34. These added give a total of 15,579. Numeracy skill is lacking even at the top of GECOM. It was a charade that with time it would be right.
But let us look at Regions Four and Ten. Georgetown is in Region Four and Linden is in Region Ten. These have been APNU strongholds for years in the elections in Guyana. The 63,000 that did not vote in the two regions, according to GECOM, were apathetic or lethargic and could not care who won or lost the election. But this contradicts the zeal and enthusiasm shown in these regions throughout the campaigns.
Voter education was at its highest; electioneering was at its greatest. People’s energies soared and they were determined to vote for better wages and salaries, and general improvement in living conditions. Maybe the missing statements of poll will tell the true story.
GECOM needs to show all Guyanese at home and abroad how it arrived at its conclusions when SOPs are not counted and there was voting on tendered ballots and seals of ballot boxes were found in large numbers, and cell phone was broken and statements of poll were destroyed and document showed a deliberate attempt to deny people of their franchise, etc.
