Defending Men’s Open champion Hikers led by a seven-goal effort from their prolific
Diamond Mineral Water International Indoor Festival action between Fatima and Hikers last evening at the National Gymnasium.
striker Robert France got off to an enterprising start in this year’s Diamond Mineral Water International Indoor Festival with a 12-1 drubbing of Supernova as play got underway on the recently installed TARAFLEX Floor, at the National Gymnasium.
The surface, a far cry from the uneven bounce that is experienced at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall saw players enjoy the true nature of the facility and fans were entertained by the silky dribbling skills of a few, including Hikers’ Jerazeno ‘Skillaxe’ Bell, while France the ultimate poacher was deadly inside the circle.
He netted in the 6, 7, 8, 9, 16, 18 and 29th minutes, while Bell (5, 30), Randy Hope (32, 13) and Colonel Heywood (10) completed their tally. Osafa Timmerman’s (27) minute strike was the lone response for Supernova.
In the second game, Flora GCC, too, got off to an impressive start with a comfortable 5-0 triumph over Hikers in a Ladies affair. Dominique DeGroot (13, 16), Gabriella Xavier (1, 37) and Marzana Fiedtkou (32) were the players on target.
GCC then edged Old Old Fort 3-2 in a Veterans clash that saw the latter squander numerous chances which they eventually paid the price for. Alan Fernandes (16, 20, and 23) netted a hat-trick for the winners, while Wayne St. Jules (11, 18) scored a brace for Old Old Fort.
Up to press time, Trinidad and Tobago’s Fatima was leading Hikers in a Veterans encounter, but the full results of the remaining matches will be published in a subsequent report.
