Rashad Hussain of St. Roses High School and Suhai Feng of Queens College
both experienced mixed fortunes when they participated in the just concluded Suriname Open Rotary Chess Tournament staged in that country over the past week.
They failed to win the tournament but managed to salvage some pride after chalking up individual awards. Feng copped the U-20 Bronze Medal, while Hussain was awarded the Suriname Open Rotary Chess Tournament Under-20 Gold Medal.
Hussain dropped games to FIDE rated player, Barbadian Jerome Harewood (1689) and Surinamese, Joel Fridje, the 2nd and 3rd place finishers. He eventually amassed 5 points but was demoted to 6th place after the tie break system was employed.
Both Hussain and Feng were competing in the current National Senior Chess Championship at the Ocean Spray Hotel but opted out to participate in the above tournament while citing the refusal of officials of the Guyana Chess Federation.
The players said that chess administrators are withholding vital information from them which prompted their withdrawal from the tournament after their requests for same were denied. The players said that their dismal performances at the Suriname tournament could be attributed to this decision. They also cited the need for international exposure. They both played in the open category.
Meanwhile, Feng finished in the 8th place spot after dropping one game to Geryen Dos Ramos by time default. He registered 13 minutes to Geryen’s 1. The latter player then shrewdly rebounded from his increments and secured the win. He drew 3 games.
Adrianus Vlugman who currently resides in Guyana earned the Gold medal for senior players after ending on 4 points. He also secured a draw against Junior Champion, Suhai Feng in round 5. Both Feng and Hussain would like to thank Ryan Kerrett and Scott Singh for the support rendered throughout the tournament.
