Diamond Mineral Water International Indoor Festival
With the Diamond Mineral Water International Indoor Festival set to commence tomorrow and run until Saturday, all the local teams slated to participate in this year’s event has been intensifying preparations, at the National Gymnasium.
Kaieteur Sport decided to take a look at the three teams that the Georgetown Cricket Club (GCC) will be fielding during the tournament.
The three units will be participating in the Men’s Open, Veteran (Men) and Ladies categories.
Founded in 1858, The Georgetown Cricket Club (GCC) boasts the reputation of being the oldest cricket club in the West Indian region. Hockey at Bourda has also carried on its long tradition of fierce competition and camaraderie among fellow West Indian rivals.
The GCC men’s hockey team has been at the top of the local first division league for most of the last 25 years. It boasts a number of former nationals and junior nationals and has established a successful record in club tournaments regionally.
Although they have achieved more success in the outdoor game, GCC hope to improve their indoor record with this year’s Diamond Mineral Water International Indoor Festival. With this year being a broken one for indoor hockey due to a lack of facilities to train, the club has been limited in its ability to prepare. However, the team has experience on its side with several players in its first selection having played for club and country for a number of years.
Led by Captain Devin Hooper, who will feature on both the men’s and veterans sides, the team has strong support from defensive stalwart and recent national, Dwayne Scott. In addition, the skilful duo of Orland Semple and Kevin Spencer are sure to produce something special for their side.
The GCC ladies seem are relative newcomers to the game when compared to the men but have experienced greater success at indoor hockey. Having won the festival on two occasions then losing a close battle in 2009 against Malvern, the ladies are keen to return to the podium this year. While Captain Sonia Jardine remains the livewire of the side, she will be well supported by improving junior players, goalkeeper Alysa Xavier, defender Marzana Fiedtkou and striker Gabriella Xavier. Boosted by the junior team’s recent success in Trinidad, we anticipate a stronger team this time around.
