The security guards stationed at the Kuru Kururu Extension Centre have now been given something to smile about. They received outstanding payments, yesterday.
Mr. Austil Ogle, General Manager of the United Associates, the guard service in question, took full responsibility for having to pay these workers, and assured that they will be paid their overdue before Christmas.
However, the man explained that it is the National Agriculture Research Institute (NARI), which is administered by the Ministry of Agriculture that has been the cause of the frustration of these workers as his company (United Associates) is being paid by NARI.
“We have a contract with NARI that they pay us and we pay the guards that are employed with us, but work for them” said Ogle, who also promised that he will see to it that the guards are being paid in full.
Kaieteur News was made to understand that the women were being paid two to three months apart for a long time and that it has now become the official trend of payment.
When Carol Todd, a representative for the guards, along with a few of her workmates, visited Kaieteur News yesterday, they realized that they had no money to return home.
Fortunately for these women, they subsequently received a telephone call to uplift their unpaid salaries.
Before receiving their salaries, these workers, consisting of mostly single mothers said that they found it extremely difficult to carry on with their lives without cash for so many months.
“Some days I find it really hard to feed myself and my daughter. She has to stay home most of the time because I don’t get money fuh pay she school fees,” said Todd.
