Staff of the Mayor and City Council (M&CC) could breathe a sigh of relief as they are expected to be paid their salaries in time for the holidays.
Throughout the year, the cash-strapped Council found it difficult to pay employees on time.
Mayor Hamilton Green has stated that the Council has made arrangements to pay salaries by mid-December.
While Government increased public servants’ salaries by eight percent, the Council’s employees will not receive any increases owing to its financial situation.
Green emphasised that the reversal of the Council’s financial woes depends primarily on Government’s approach towards the body’s independence to operate and access revenue.
Currently, the Council’s major access to financing is tax collection which is usually met with challenges by errant tax payers.
To obtain outstanding payments the Council recently had a 42-day amnesty period which garnered over $170M.
Green stressed that during the Christmas season tax collection is traditionally low. The body is therefore unsure if it will have enough money to pay contracted garbage disposal companies to collect waste during the holidays.
Several times during the year the Council was unable to pay contractors to collect garbage which resulted in the contractors striking.
