-Munroe still mum on participation
By Edison Jefford
Current National Senior Men’s Champion, Godfrey Munroe is mum on whether or
Flashback!!! Godfrey Munroe took two weeks to whip himself into shape for the National Senior Championships last year before going on to win his third title and second consecutive. He’s mum on his participation this year.
not he will compete in the upcoming National Championships as the Guyana Table Tennis Association (GTTA) puts the event into perspective to end the 2011 Season.
Asked yesterday whether he will be defending the title he won for a third time last year, Munroe declined comment on that subject. Munroe, who is arguably Guyana’s best player and also General Secretary of the GTTA, merely said that when the time is right he will let the media in on his playing status.
However, he updated Kaieteur Sport on the GTTA plan to host the country’s leading competition and the progress they have made with preparations. To further fine-tune some logistics, they will be meeting today; following which, certain grey areas will be clarified.
The dates have been set for December 9-11 when the Junior version of the Championships will be held and December 15-17 for the Senior Championships. Initially, the association had set the junior competition for the National Gymnasium, and senior competition for the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall, but that schedule is likely to change. The issue of available dates is among the things high on the agenda for the GTTA meeting today.
“We have to take into consideration that Hockey is now competing with us for the Gymnasium and from all indications they have gotten that venue, so there might be some date changes which makes what we had set before very tentative,” Munroe said.
The Diamond Mineral Water International Hockey Festival will be held during December 8-11 at the National Gymnasium that has been renovated with a synthetic turf. The international tournament will make the venue unavailable to the table tennis association. “I think now it’s a question of the availability of the Sports Hall,” Munroe continued.
He said that full details on the association’s plans to host the Championships that returned with much fanfare last year after a two-year absence from the GTTA calendar, will be available after the meeting today. Munroe believes it is a matter of putting plans in perspective.
“Given the (National) Elections, venue availability and some things of that nature, we have to confirm some things. We had considered all the possibilities before we had elections, but we still have to meet to concretise some things before we give full details,” Munroe noted.
The National Championships last year attracted the crème de le crème in Guyana’s table tennis. The notable players who did not compete were United States-based, Michelle John and Idi Lewis. However, Lewis is currently in Guyana, but has not yet confirmed whether or not he will be playing as well.
Because of the nature and purpose of the tournament that acts as the primary source for national ranking and selection, it is thought that Guyana’s leading players should compete in the event in an effort to continue to raise the standards of the competition.
