Woman begs – ‘Don’t ignore the signs of domestic abuse’

While some women recognize the signs of domestic abuse in the early stages and choose to ignore them, there are those who live in torment for years, since they often feel that they have no other alternatives.
For others, they believe that the men in their lives will at some point change their behaviours, when they realize how much they are loved or cared for.
“Sandy” (real name not used) found out the hard way that wishes like those hardly ever come true.
Kaieteur News understands that Sandy, a mother of one, was intimately involved with a gentleman (Jason) for the past three years.
He was an ideal man for the first few months; loving, caring and attentive to both Sandy and her son.
Soon after, she discovered that whenever Jason became upset, he would raise his voice and then deal her a slap or two. Sandy ignored these actions which she said were just “small things”.
The woman told this newspaper that last December; Jason left the country on a business trip and only returned to Guyana in April. Things began to go downhill upon his return home.
Sandy explained that though they were in a relationship, she never shared a home with Jason, who lives in Georgetown.
She went to visit him one afternoon but he was not at home so she decided to join her friends at the shop next to his home. They had a few drinks.
When he arrived home, Sandy called out to him to collect her two cellular phones, but he began to get angry and dealt her a few slaps.
These few slaps resulted in him getting angrier. An argument erupted. He continued to beat her until she lost consciousness.
She sustained numerous injuries, least among them were a black and blue eye, bruises and abrasions, cuts on her face, and some scratches on her body.
She later regained consciousness and made a report to the Kitty Police Station.
Currently the case is in the courts. However, she claims that the man is still harassing her.
She told this newspaper that she just wants matters like these to be highlighted so that women ‘out there’ would be able to see the signs of abuse when they are now being revealed and not take the matter lightly.
