The decomposing bodies of three students from the Aishalton Secondary School, Region Nine, were dug out from an abandoned mining pit at Sandhills on Saturday morning, one week after they were reported missing.
Police identified the victims as Claybert Thompson, 12; Mark Thompson, 11, and Adrian Brown, 11.
It is believed that the lads entered the pit and had fallen asleep when it caved in on them.
A source said that cause of death was given as asphyxiation due to suffocation.
Kaieteur News understands that the gruesome find was made by the students’ dormitory master, Benedict Jones.
According to reports, the boys left their dormitory with their belongings on November 27 and could not be located despite several searches in the surrounding areas.
Kaieteur News was told that after exhausting all areas, a check was made at an abandoned pit and it was observed that the walls of the pit had recently caved in.
Anxious searchers began digging and after several hours, they made the shocking discovery.
Mark Thompson was lying face down, while the other two lads were lying on their sides.
The victims were taken to the Aishalton District Hospital.
The bodies were then handed over to the victims’ parents for burial at the Aishalton Cemetery.
The Government Information Agency (GINA) said President Donald Ramotar has since dispatched a team to investigate the circumstances surrounding the deaths of three students.
The team comprised officials from the Ministries of Education and Amerindian Affairs.
