The Vishaul Singh led Guyana Cricket Board President’s XI defeated the Gizmos & Gadgets Georgetown Pitbulls off the final ball of an action-packed Super over at Albion yesterday to take the Carib/Pepsi t20 Big Smash cricket competition after the final had ended in a pulsating tie.

out decision was reversed and Man-of-the-Final Elton Baker stroked Ferrier for a couple when the final ball was re-bowled to give the President’s X1, who got past favourites Church’s Chicken Corentyne Titans in the rain affected semifinals, a sensational upset victory and the one million dollar first prize.
The officials ruled that Ferrier was already into his bowling action when he hit the non-striker’s wicket with Batson backing up too far and tournament Director Robin Singh informed that the winners opted to share the first prize with the Pitbulls who received $400,000.
After West Indies t20 player Chris Barnwell fell to the first ball of the Super over from off-spinner Eon Hooper, Trevon Griffith struck a six, a four and two doubles before being caught off the final ball as the Pitbulls scored 16-1 off their solitary over.
Ferrier struck with the first ball of the President’s X1 reply when Dellon Heyliger was stumped off a leg-side wide before Baker, just one of two batsmen with a century to their name, struck a six and three twos before Batson was controversially given run out.
The right-hander from GNIC in Georgetown then ensured victory for his side when the last ball was re-bowled.
In the original encounter, Skipper Singh hit a solid 30 before Heyliger finished unbeaten on 35 from 24 balls as the President’s X1 batted first on a flat but good track for batting in sunny conditions.
Norman Fredericks made 24 and Batson 19 as the President’s X1 reached 126-6 when their 20 overs expired as Ferrier, a member of Guyana’s 2006 Stanford t20 championship winning team, followed up his three wickets in the semifinals with 4-11 from 4 overs. Steven Jacobs had 1-15 from four tight overs of off-spin.
Singh was run out at the non-striker’s end backing up too far as the ball hit his bat off a deflection from the bowler’s hand.
When the Pitbulls began their reply Griffith played across to Hooper and was trapped leg before for a first ball duck, while the run outs of Rajendra Chandrika (8), Waslim Haslim (1) and Troy Gonsalves (0) added to the drama before the game ended in a tie.
Barnwell top-scored with 36, while Leon Johnson made 29, Jacobs 23 and the versatile Ferrier made an unbeaten 17.
Left-arm spinner Totaram Bishun, the leading wicket-taker in the competition, took 2-19 from four overs and got support from Jeetendra Sookdeo (2-20 from 3) and Hooper (1-10 from 4) as the President’s X1 reached 126-8.
In an all Berbice Third Place play-off, the Corentyne Titans hammered Mario Pizza’s West Berbice by 136 runs in sweltering heat after making 202-4 off 20 overs and dismissing the Region Five team for 66 in 14.5 overs.
Skipper Royston Crandon led the way with an unbeaten 60 from just 22 balls with six fours and four sixes and added 78 in five overs in an unfinished fifth wicket stand with Rajiv Ivan who made 58 not out from 40 balls with seven fours and a six.
The pair joined forces when Jonathon Foo (16) was dismissed at 124-4 in the 14th over by Eon Abel and thumped the ball to all parts of the Albion sward much to the delight of the vocal crowd.
Sewnarine Chattergoon, with a century in the preliminary rounds, made 33 and added 42 in 4.5 overs for the first wicket with Keeper Anthony Bramble (23) before Keyron Fraser got rid of Bramble.
Raun Johnson then had the prized scalp of Narsingh Deonarine for a second ball duck a run later while Foo’s demise made way for the undefeated pugnacious fifth wicket partnership.
When West Berbice batted, only Romaine Boodram (19) reached double figures as medium pacer Yogeswar Harrinarine grabbed 5-20 from four overs and got support from Stephen Latcha (2-3 off 2.5 overs), Veerasammy Permaul (1-4 from 3), Deonarine (1-14 from 3) and Clinton Pestano (1-23 from 2)
Vishaul Singh was named Man-of-the-Series for his consistent batting and inspiring leadership throughout the competition.
