Dear Editor,
One wonders how many people would have expected the results of the recent General Elections to turn out the way they have – the party from which the next President may be expected to be elected gaining 32 seats, two others, combined, with 33. If these two political parties decide to form a coalition in opposition – in effect a marriage of convenience – the Government, with a majority of one, may be in for a very tricky and stressful reign.
The results brought to mind the UK scenario of a few decades ago. The Government of the day had a majority of one and, when voting on crucial issues, frantic efforts had to be made to make sure all their MPs were present to vote.
On one occasion, when an important Bill had to be voted on, an MP was airlifted from his sick bed in hospital to make sure everyone was in place.
Watching that poor man being ‘disgorged’ from a plane on a stretcher was not a pretty sight. Let us hope our homeland experiences no such indignity.
