While many persons remained at home yesterday, apprehensive about yesterday’s
proceedings, Georgetown returned to some state of normalcy. Almost all of the stores opened for business on Regent and Robb Streets.
Though business was not as bright as many storeowners wished, they were thankful for the small number of customers who came, and for the few sales that were recorded.
The hustle and bustle in central Georgetown resumed later in the day with shoppers rushing to the supermarkets and markets to begin “stocking up” for the Christmas season.
Kaieteur News visited a few stores and noticed persons carrying on with their shopping as if the election period did not have any effect on them.
One man said, “I glad this election come and gone. I only hope no trouble stirs ‘cause is we store people does feel. We does got to lock up tight and hope that nobody nah break in and rob we or fire don’t burn down we place. Staff didn’t even turn up for the past few days ‘cause them frighten the protestors.”
A few stores still remained closed as if their owners were waiting until the new President was sworn in and verify that no trouble would have taken place.
“Me don’t like election time. People does get on too stupid. Why them got to behave
like that? When we all done is we got to all live with each other. Black, white or pink, we is all Guyanese. When this swearing in thing done then we plan to open back,” were the words of another storeowner.
At the minibus parks, a majority of minibus operators and conductors returned to their everyday routine, securing passengers for their trips and earning money.
Passengers were calmly standing at the parks trying to decide which vehicle they would use to go to their various destinations. At the same time the touts were competing to see who would load a minibus faster.
“Well I happy that no nonsense ain’t going on this year. At least everyone can share government now. I just hope it remain so and the rest of people out there realize that the country safe.
“Parents can send their children to school back now. We alright,” said a female passenger of the route #42 minibus park. (Kristen Macklingam)
