AN APPEAL TO MR KHEMRAJ RAMJATTAN AND THE AFC

Dear Editor,
Mr Ramjattan, I foremostly must congratulate you, the leadership of the Alliance for Change Party, and the passionate supporters for securing a significant 10.3 percent of total votes cast as declared by the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM), and consequently shifting the paradigms of the politics of our country in a historic way, creating a majority Parliamentary Opposition.
I was a university student when you and Mr. Raphael Trotman first established the AFC, and instantly commanded the attention and support of the intellectual masses. It is obvious that the support base has broadened since, considering the fact that your Party secured 8.1 percent of the votes cast in the 2006 Elections (2.2 percent less than achieved in 2011).
Sir, many have already begun to opine and fear that you might fall prey to the courting and lure of the ruling PPP/C that boasts, for the first time in the annals of our politics, a minority government.
The PPP/C thrives on the belief that Indo-Guyanese, especially Berbicians, are essentially racial, and unfortunately the evidence is stacked in support of this belief. Consequently, the PPP/C and its supporters are confident that you will become an ally of the government, stymieing the cause of the Opposition on whose side of the bench you sit. But Sir, on behalf of your supporters and those of A Partnership for National Unity (APNU), I sound a clarion call to your better judgment, urging you to be an ambassador of Indo-Guyanese who are NON-Racial.
I urge that you remember the realities that prompted your departure from that Party, and how you have since been treated like an outcast. I plead with you to remember the principles you have articulated, and by which you have commanded your support. Remember that your support base is heterogeneous in terms of ethnicity, religion and social standing. Remember that most of your supporters are the young, intellectual minds of our beloved country – the people to whose care and stewardship our country’s governance MUST be ultimately entrusted.
Appreciate how pivotal your role is to the “change” for which our country has moaned like a woman in labour. The balance of power is in your hands. Please do not “throw it over your shoulders”. Please do not betray the trust of your people. Please be that cog in the wheel to growth and development. May God bless you. May God bless the Cooperative Republic of Guyana.
