Ramotar’s inauguration within 48 hours

–    political parties expected to issue joint acceptance statement today

Guyana is expected to swear-in Donald Ramotar as its next President within the next 48 hours, a victorious People’s Progressive Party/Civic announced last night.
Hours after the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) named Ramotar as the President-elect, PPP/C Executive Member, Robert Persaud, also acknowledged that apathy may have been a main contributory factor that saw over 15,000 supporters staying at home and not turning out to cast their ballot in Monday’s General and Regional Elections.
GECOM’s sloth in announcing the results had raised tensions, with PPP/C meeting the two oppositions, Alliance For Change (AFC) and A Partnership For National Unity (APNU) last evening at the Parliament Buildings to explore a possible joint statement accepting the results of the elections.
That statement, which has already been approved by the PPP/C and the AFC, is still to be green-lighted by the APNU.
According to Persaud, this could come as early as today, once APNU approves the text.
The shocking loss of votes was made worse by the discovery that in at least one area –Region One- the PPP/C lost a seat by a mere six votes- a seat that cost them the Parliament majority.
The party admitted last night that it could have been worse, urging for its supporters to regroup by “passing the message on, recruit each supporter, every patriot, let them know how critical it is to protect the democracy we all fought so long and hard for.”
