A 39-year-old Brazilian immigrant spent the night in jail after he was yesterday remanded to prison for allegedly forging official documents intending to extend his stay and prolong his right to work in Guyana.
Nadir Peirs Queresma, who the court heard is a miner, was caught trying to travel to Lethem via the Ogle International Airport with fake documents. According to the charge read by Magistrate Sueanna Lovell, Queresma, with the intent to defraud, conspired with other persons to forge one Republic Of Guyana work permit purporting to be issued by the Central Immigration Office.
Further charges indicated that Queresma uttered the same forged document to immigration officers on duty at the said Ogle Airport knowing that the documents were bogus. The man reportedly had within his Brazilian passport the fake extended work permit.
Information continued that while Queresma was at Cuyuni in the Upper Essequibo, he, with persons unknown, forged the said documents which he presented as evidence of legal documentation to stay and work in Guyana. It was alleged that while the man was seeking to exit the hub of the country to enter the interior area through the Ogle Airspace, ranks noticed the alleged fake papers.
It was indicated that checks were made as to verify the said unworthy looking document, where it was revealed that the information was indeed fake. The defendant was subsequently arrested and charged with the said offence.
With the assistance of a translator, it was discovered that the Brazilian had been in Guyana for a little over two months. He provided no place of abode. The court further remanded the foreigner and he is expected in court today.
