A man was yesterday remanded to jail after appearing before Magistrate Sueanna Lovell for allegedly breaking into Richard Ishmael Secondary School on Woolford Avenue, and stealing items valued close to $80,000 – property of the Ministry of Education.
Wilton Smith pleaded not guilty to the charge after it was indicated that he stole articles belonging to the school which included chalk, text books, and garbage bins, among other items. The court was informed that on November 30, the 29-year-old porter was seen by a security guard scaling the school fence with a ‘salt bag ‘across his shoulder. The guard further raised an alarm where the defendant dropped the said bag and made good his escape.
Making checks, some of the articles missing from the school were recovered in the bag the man allegedly had in his possession. Investigations were carried out and the defendant was later arrested and charged for the offence.
The accused man later told the court that he had been previously arrested and charged for an offence similar to that which he was before the court for. He further gave a Kitty address as his place of abode. Smith was subsequently remanded for the alleged theft of the school property and will return to court on December 12.
