Up to press time yesterday police were still trying to ascertain the identity of a man who
was shot by police during a confrontation at Maripa Dukwari Landing, Cuyuni River.
Late yesterday afternoon ranks from the interior escorted the dead man’s remains to the Lyken Funeral home where it remained unidentified.
Initial reports are that two police ranks were on duty escorting ballot boxes to Maripa Dukwari and Kurutuku.
While at the Maripa Dukwari Landing, the ranks were attacked by three men who were armed and who attempted to take away their firearms.
During the confrontation one of the men was fatally shot. The other two men fled the scene.
Police said that the dead man was armed with two handguns along with a quantity of ammunition which have been recovered by the police. The police eventually recovered three firearms, comprising two 9mm. and one .357, along with 12 rounds ammunition at the scene.
According to the police all the circumstances surrounding the fatal shooting are not yet very clear, but the initial report suggests that the dead man might have been wanted for a series of armed robberies in the interior and might have been about to commit another robbery at the Landing when he confronted the police.
The ballot boxes and ballot materials were all intact.
