Quick action by residents of Betsy Ground, East Canje Berbice, averted what could have been a major disaster after an enraged man set fire to the house of another resident with whom he had earlier had a fight on Sunday night.
According to Rajpattie Judister, 24, she, her husband Omadat Seecharran, 30, a cane harvester attached to the Rose Hall Estate, and their four-year-old son, Devin, live at the house at Second Lot Betsy Ground.
According to the woman, her husband left earlier to go to a wedding house in the same village. The arson suspect, known as “Tattoo Man”, and her husband had a confrontation at the wedding house where the suspect threatened to beat him up and burn his house down with his family inside.
The woman said that her husband was on his way home at around 21:30 hrs when “Tattoo Man” ambushed him and dealt him several slaps.
She said that “Tattoo man” then broke a paling stave and decided to charge behind her husband. The man who was intoxicated decided to run home with “Tattoo man” in hot pursuit. He was hit with the paling stave as he entered his yard. The man then escaped before her husband could pick up something to defend himself.
The woman said she was in her house with her family at around 23:00 hrs when the phone rang and she heard shouts of fire, fire coming from the neighbours.
She immediately raced downstairs and was confronted by a kitchen full of smoke. Neighbours quickly formed a bucket brigade and quelled the fire.
Upon observation later it was notice that the fire was set at two different spots. The Guyana Fire Service was also summoned but did not have to go into action.
The man was also seen running away from the area. According to residents the police were also informed, but did not show up.
The man returned to the area at about 08:00 hrs on Monday morning armed with a cutlass and again threatened Seecharran and his wife. Another report was made and up to 09:00hrs the police had not arrived.
