– Family blames “negligent nurses”
A 32- year- old cane harvester hanged himself yesterday in the male ward of the Port Mourant Hospital shortly
after 15:00 hrs and the man’s irate family is blaming “negligent nurses” at the facility.
Rohan “Sarwan” Khame, of Alness, Corentyne, was admitted on Monday at the hospital after ingesting a poisonous substance and according to his aunt, Ninawattie Manawar, she asked a senior nurse for permission for one of the family members to remain with him in the ward. Manawar stated that the request was refused and they were told to go and get some pampers for him.
The family later returned with the pampers and gave them to another nurse. Manawar then added that they discovered the door of the hospital ward locked. “The senior nurse (name given) tell we dat she go look after the patient and when done, she did not look after the patient. She lock the door from we and never allow we to go in”, she added.
About 14:30 hrs, the family members peeked into the hospital window since they were not allowed inside. Just then they were alerted by the hospital sweeper/ cleaner downstairs that Khame was hanging from his room upstairs.
“She (the senior nurse) nah allow we to go to see the boy and she ain’t got no time with the boy”, Manawar said. “If the nurse was there, that wouldn’t have happened. We were outside and we see from here that no nurse was in the ward, we go in from the step and peep, no nurse was in the ward. The senior nurse tell us go out, and she will look after the patient and we sent the pampers and she didn’t even look after him”.
Khame’s wife, Jenny Ramotar, said that the nurse “won’t get off from this”.
When Kaieteur News arrived on the scene, the body was being brought down via the hospital stairs and was whisked away to the
Ramoo’s Funeral Home by ambulance. Relatives then started to scream and holler, while one of his sisters, Hemwattie Mooklall, collapsed.
Kaieteur News sought a comment from the senior nurse who said that the patient was a “suicide case” and that different nurses had to tend to him. She added that before they knew it, “he jumped over from the chair and hang himself”. She also said that they are short of staff at the moment.
Relatives said that the nurse “got the fault because she did not open the door”, and “when 3 ‘o clock visiting started, still she did not open the door”. They added that after the cleaner alerted them that the boy was “tying the sheet up there”, they screamed for the nurse to open the door but their calls fell on deaf ears. “We climb from the window all [to alert the nurse]”.
Another relative said that the institution is a “cowboy hospital”. “Nobody cares for nobody here!” “Them na even get a bed sheet or a pillow. If you go upstairs yuh shame of the condition”.
Khame leaves to mourn his wife and 3 children – Navin, 9; Alvin, 4 and Ravin, 1.
