Victoria Primary victorious at Schools’ Quiz Competition

The Victoria Primary School on the East Coast Demerara, was victorious at the village’s recent Schools’ Quiz Competition. Its opponent was St. Andrews Primary School of neighbouring village, Cove and John.
The competition was held at the Victoria Primary, as part of the village’s 172 Anniversary celebrations.  The students were quizzed on the ‘History of Victoria’, a publication which is written by Williams Nicholas Arno. The booklet was given to the students two weeks prior to the competition.
Nallissa Charles, a Grade Five student of Victoria Primary won the Keltec Document Centre Trophy for scoring the highest points, 25, while the second top scorer was Alliyah Josiah of St. Andrews Primary who gained 20 points.
The visiting team took the first round, scoring 14 points to Victoria’s 12.  In the second round Victoria Primary took lead with 43 to 23 points.
Charles excelled in the Final Round scoring 10 points giving Victoria Primary a comfortable victory with 53 to 35 points.
Apart from Nallissa Charles, the Victoria Primary team was made up of Joshia Benjamin, Allanna Gulliver and Kimberly Hossanah.
St. Andrews Primary was represented by Martiza Lutchman, Jada Thomas, Roxanne Austin, Alliyah Josaih, and Paulann Charles.
Victoria was purchased by ex-slaves on November 7, 1839, one year after the abolition of slavery. They started out as farmers and to date agriculture continues to be the village’s major economic activity.
