Sometime during today, if you turn on your radio, one of the most knowledgeable Guyanese on cricket will remind you about the significance of today, November 28.
He will no doubt inform you that this is the day in which two of the greatest fast bowlers that the West Indies ever produced, Michael Holding and Wes Hall, made their test debuts. He will also remind you that it was on November 28, 1931 that the great Sir. Donald Bradman scored 226 against South Africa at the Gabba.
This was also the day in 1974 that John Lennon, formerly of the Beatles, made his last stage appearance in New York City.
Today is a significant day in Guyana, but who needs anyone to tell them that. The significance is known to every resident Guyanese and a great many of those who are not resident.
It is a special day very much like that day when a wife said to her husband as he was going through the door, “I bet you don’t know what day this is.”
The husband was perplexed, but was always a quick thinker: “Of course I do, my dear. How could I forget!?” With that, he turned and rushed to catch the bus for work.
At 10 AM, the doorbell rang and when the woman opened the door, she was handed a box containing a dozen long stemmed red roses.
At 1 PM, a foil wrapped, two pound box of her favorite chocolates arrived. Later, a boutique delivered a designer dress. The woman couldn’t wait for her husband to come home.
The husband was smug when he returned from work, satisfied that he had recovered what could have been a very bad situation.
His wife was indeed surprised: “First the flowers, then the chocolates and then the dress!” she exclaimed, “And all because it is the day you are supposed to pick up the kids from school.”
Poor guy, he swung around and was out of the house as fast as he could. As he was backing out of the driveway he saw his daughter with a glum look on her face walking along the pave leading to their home.
He jumped out of the vehicle, apologized for failing to pick her up and then quickly ushered her into the house.
The mother noticed the glum look on the child’ s face and asked her what was the problem. The father began to shiver, thinking that his wife would discover that he had completely forgotten about picking up their daughter from school.
To his utter surprise the girl said, “ I got punished in school for something that I did not do”
“What is it that you did not do?” asked her mom
The girl replied, “ I did not do my homework.”
Some kids try to bribe their teachers with gifts whenever they get a chance. They use special occasions such as Teachers’ Day to present their teachers with gifts as a reminder of how kind they are.
Talking about school, the latest gig is for a day to be designated as Teachers’ Day.
On a special Teacher’s Day, a kindergarten teacher was receiving Teacher Day gifts. The Florist’s son handed her a gift.
She shook it and held it over her head, and said, “I bet I know what it is….some flowers.”
“That’s right!” said the boy.
“But how did you know?” “Just a wild guess,” she said.
The next pupil was the candy storeowner’s daughter.
The teacher held her gift overhead, shook it, and said, “I bet I can guess what it is…a box of candy.”
“That’s right! But how did you know?” asked the girl.
“Just a lucky guess,” said the teacher.
The next gift was from the liquor storeowner’s son. The teacher held it over her head but it was leaking.
She touched a drop of the leakage with her finger and tasted it. “Is it wine?” she asked.
“No,” the boy replied. The teacher repeated the process, touching another drop of the leakage to her tongue.
“Is it champagne?” she asked.
“No,” the boy replied.
The teacher then said, “I give up, what it is?”
The boy replied, “A puppy!”
