CARICOM Regional Organisation and Standards and Quality (CROSQ) and the Guyana National Bureau of Standards (GNBS) this week concluded a five-day workshop which focused on strengthening the capabilities of testing laboratories in Guyana so that they can provide reliable, competent and internationally recognized services.
The workshop titled ‘Better Validation and Verification’ was held at the Regency Hotel, Hadfield Street.
Twenty Nine persons from over 15 medical as well as testing laboratories participated in the workshop.
The event was designed to equip laboratories with the method of verification and validation as required by the ISO17025 and the ISO15189 standards.
According to Head of the Conformity Assessment Department, GNBS, Candelle Bostwick-Walcott, the workshop took the lab personnel through the steps as to how they can go about validating their methods as it relates to the ISO standards. She added that the workshop is very critical to Guyana, especially as the country is moving towards accreditation.
CROSQ is made up of 15 nations and is the successor to the Caribbean Common Market Standards Council (CCMSR). It is the regional centre for promoting efficiency and competitive production in goods and services through the process of standardisation and verification of quality.
The training workshop for the testing labs will be implemented in all CROSQ 15 member nations.
International Organisation for Standardisation or ISO is the largest developers and publishers of international standards as it pertains to products and services. The ISO 17025 and the ISO 15189 are the standard requirements of laboratories and they specify the general requirements for competencies, not only for carrying out tests in these laboratories but also covering such areas as the provision of advice to users of the laboratory services.
