For years, residents of the East Coast Demerara community of Mon Repos, North, have had to put up with the noise emanating from the operations of a privately owned ice factory. But today the situation has reached a stage where they are no longer prepared to put up with the constant hum of a large generator that powers the business.
They have complained to all the relevant agencies- the police, the Environmental Protection Agency, the Neighbourhood Democratic Council-in vain.
The residents have even resorted to a written petition signed by persons from 25 households in the community with the hope of getting those responsible to act.
According to residents, the generating set operates almost on a 24-hour basis and it is most annoying at nights, resulting in many persons, including babies, senior citizens and students studying for examinations, being unable to sleep.
“You see when this generator is on, there is no way you could sleep,” one resident stated.
The residents claimed that on several occasions they had asked the owner of the facility to operate the generator in a way that would not affect the rest of the neighbourhood, but their appeals have fallen on deaf ears.
The residents claimed that on occasions, the owner of the ice factory would become abusive whenever he is confronted about the noise nuisance.
“When you play you music lil hard, de police does come quick and lock you up and seize you thing, but some people like dem above de law,” another resident told Kaieteur News.
When this newspaper tried to solicit a comment from the proprietor, an employee there indicated that he was not available.
The employee also declined to provide a telephone number at which the owner could be reached.
Kaieteur News understands that the Environmental Protection Agency has written to the management of the ice factory and they are expected to take further action if their recommendations are not complied with.
