First Street Warriors, the Georgetown zone winners, romped to the overall glory on Saturday night at the Georgetown Football Club ground, when they beat Grove Back Street 9-8 on sudden death penalties to claim the $150,000 1st prize in the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports organized 7:15 Inter-Block football title.
In soggy conditions due to heavy rainfall earlier in the day, First Street Warriors were forced to defend tenaciously against the East Bank zone champions.
The small but vociferous crowd lent their support as both teams failed to get on the score sheet after regulation time despite several chances. This stalemate resulted in a sudden death penalty shootout which resulted in the Campbellville outfit coming out on top to claim the winner’s prize and trophy. Grove Back Street for their efforts collected the $75,000 and a trophy second prize.
Earlier in the night, West Berbice champions Hopetown scored in the 14th minute, compliments of Delroy Fraser to lead First Street. Richie Richards then leveled things in the second half for First Street, forcing the game into penalties as the scores ended locked.
First Street Warriors went onto win the encounter 5-4 on penalties and a place in the final.
In the second game, Grove Back Street defeated Stewartville All Stars from West Demerara 2-0. Domini Garnett and Timothy Griffith scored for the winners, who inflicted a 1-0 defeat on One Mile from Linden, with the goal coming off the boot of Colin Lancaster.
In their second game Hopetown got a walk over from East Coast Demerara champions Company Road of Buxton.
Parliamentary Secretary within the Sports Ministry, Steve Ninvalle, congratulated the champions while stating that the objectives of the tournament were met, making it an all round success.
”At the start of this tournament, our aim was to unite not only the players within their respective villages, but build bonds and create friendship amongst the villages who were competing against each other and judging from what we observed at matches, that was achieved.”
He thanked the Government of Guyana for providing the sponsorship for the tournament, while congratulating the winners and all participating teams. Ninvalle noted that they were keen to stage the event on a wider scale next year.
