– GNA, clubs challenged to increase players’ pool
By Rawle Welch
Digicel’s Sponsorship and Events Manager Gavin Hope speaking during the presentation ceremony following the final of the National League which ended on Sunday challenged the Guyana Netball Association (GNA) and the clubs to increase the players’ pool.
In the final, Emanie defeated Doves 47-16 with Goal-shoot Angeline Dyer-McCarthy dumping in game high 47 goals from 48 attempts. All-Stars brought third.
Hope, representing the major sponsor, told the gathering that included President of the GNA Kim Kyte-John, Banks DIH Guinness Manager Lee Baptiste, parents and fans, that they must pull together to make the event and more significantly the sport ‘bigger and better’, referring to the Company’s motto of being the ‘bigger, better network’.
“We at Digicel would like to see the school initiative come to realization and I challenge each one of you (players) here today to bring one friend to participate in the sport and I’m certain that we will have a bigger and better tournament come next year,” Hope said.
The Digicel representative in closing congratulated the Organisers for putting together a well run League, adding that they hope to be on board next year, while reminding that the Company is committed to the development of all sports cross Guyana.
Kyte-John in her remarks opened by reflecting on the commitment made by the current executive when they assumed office in February this year which according to her was to commence an ‘Awareness and Sensitization Drive’ all across the country.
The GNA President informed that to some extent they’ve been able to achieve that with games being played in both Essequibo and Berbice as part of the League, adding that more persons are now more aware of the sport’s existence in Guyana.
She stated that the GNA plans to orchestrate an aggressive programme within schools which will commence shortly, while the entity also plans to organize more tournaments, all part of the arrangement to re-popularise the sport.
Apart from extending gratitude to Digicel for its much needed support, Kyte-John also recognized the efforts made by the clubs, players and parents which she referred to as significant and worthy of praise.
Another noteworthy achievement was that the League managed to unify the players, while the high point was the assistance given by members of champions Emanie who volunteered their services to help improve and reinforce the skills of players from other clubs.
Kyte-John, who is already seen as the unifying force that seemed elusive from the sport for sometime called on the players to understand that they will have to come together if the sport is to reach the potential that many know it can.
Digicel has pledged its support in the future.
Meanwhile, teams received financial rewards as well as trophies and medals, while Most Valuable Players and other outstanding individuals also collected trophies.
The organizers thanked the following entities and individuals for their support and they are: Digicel, Banks DIH, Star Party Rentals, Sandra Backer of Berbice, Trophy of Bourda Market and all those who assisted during the competition.
