Dear Editor,
Monday, November 28th must be the dawn of a new era. This nation has suffered too much and the people severely abused and deprived for us to continue business as usual. It is time to rebuild our society on the foundation that holds all, bar none, accountable to upholding rights and laws which are essential ingredients to peaceful co-existence, holistic development, and maintaining the sovereignty of our nation state. On Monday let us together put in train the process to change our conditions.
The Guyana Trades Union Congress (GTUC) does not support November 28th being a national holiday. Ours is a culture where the majority of people depend on public transportation to get around and in making this important day in our lives a holiday must be seen as another attempt by this administration to subvert the right of citizens to cast their ballot.
Guyanese are urged to defy this act by going out in their numbers and cast their votes even if it means having to walk. Do not be turned off by your journey, how you get there, the length of the lines, and the time you have to wait. Neither, do not give in to hunger or thirst, for food and water must not deter you. Make this day your moment of sacrifice in order to achieve what is justly yours.
Voting is a right and this right must be zealously protected and let the process start now. Everyone needs to vote to elect the person(s) to advance their interests and protect their gains. To vote is to bring benefit to your livelihood, community and country. To not vote is to give away your right in determining who manages your affairs and in so doing you have also given away your right to speak about the shortcomings and abuses of those who are foisted on you.
Turn out in numbers on Monday and within the stipulated time to cast a ballot in the determination of your future. For voting is the first step in participating in decision making as it relates to self and community and must be taken seriously.
Lincoln Lewis
General Secretary, GTUC
