Contesting party in the November 28, 2011 General Elections, Alliance for Change (AFC) has expressed grave concerns towards what they call an unjust locking out of its Polling Agents. The party stated that 135 of its polling agents had initially been restricted from entering polling stations in Region Five.
However, by mid-morning the matter had been resolved. The Guyana Elections Commission intervened.
According to a release from the party’s member Cathy Hughes, 135 persons representing the party were yesterday morning restricted from entering the polling stations on the instruction of Guyana Elections Commission Regional Returning Officer, Inderjeet Persaud.
Mrs. Hughes told this paper that the persons turned up for work at the stations only to hear that the authorities at the locations were not in receipt of a list containing the names of the persons representing the Alliance For Change to work at the polling station.
Mrs. Hughes informed that the AFC agents were told that the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) had not presented the list of the names for the particular persons and as of such the representatives could not be allowed into the polling station. This, she claimed, was conveyed by the Regional Officer.
The AFC activist continued that to correct the unforeseen setback Presidential Candidate for the party, Khemraj Ramjattan, contacted GECOM Chairman Steve Surujbally, who she confirmed instructed that the AFC’s polling agents be accepted at the voting stations.
In contrast to what had been said by the AFC representative, GECOM explained negligence on the part of the party. Public Relations Officer for the Elections Commission, Vishnu Persaud informed Kaieteur News that all deputy agents for contesting parties are responsible for submitting the lists which contain the names of polling agents.
This list had not been provided to the Elections Commission Regional Returning Officer, Persaud claimed. This was the cause of the AFC members being locked out of the polling stations.
He claimed that the AFC member responsible for submitting the agents’ names fell short on his duties.
The man speaking on behalf of GECOM said that there are mechanisms put in place by GECOM and these must be followed. Mr. Persaud also expressed that it is only natural that if the officer is not in receipt of the information (list of names) then the persons would not be allowed to enter the polling stations.
Mr. Persaud has further claimed that the issue pertaining to the locked out AFC agents has been resolved. He informed that though he could not confirm whether the list of names had been submitted, the stipulations of GECOM must be followed for the relevant persons to be allowed into the voting stations.
