….screams at police, gets immediate release
A vendor wrongfully arrested Friday with two alleged ‘trunkers’ is demanding an apology and justice.
According to Hilary Alexander, 37, whose photograph was published yesterday on the front page of Kaieteur News along with two alleged robbers, he was released four hours after his arrest and has since lodged a complaint with the Police Complaints Authority over the incident.
“I want justice. The police harassed me and right now I am not working because it is shameful to have your photo in the papers like that.”
Alexander was initially believed to be part of a trio of robbers who prey on shoppers around Bourda market by breaking into their cars and motorcycles.
According to the La Parfaite Harmonie resident, on Friday shortly before 09:00 hrs, he was on Robb Street at Bourda Market shopping for plantains when he was arrested.
“I went to buy a bunch of plantains but they too fine (small) at this stand. I went to another stand and was checking out this bunch when I hear a shot. I see a crowd and this man with a gun holding another man.’
According to Alexander, he was standing by the greens stand when another man came up and ordered him to lie on the ground.
“He seh I is a thief and he squeeze me neck. Look at the mark here. I tell he I buying plantains and I ain’t no thief. He threaten to kick me.”
According to Alexander, who sells cell phone cases and works part time as a security for a North Road business, he and two other men were taken to the Alberttown Police Station and locked up.
Again at the station, he was threatened by a policeman.
“I cry, I beg and tell them I ain’t no thief. They tell me to shut up.”
It was at the police station that one of the alleged ‘trunkers’ told ranks that Alexander was innocent and they did not know him.
“Police find $15,000 in one of dem crotch and $1,000 on de other. One of them mother come and seh de family gun pay back the woman that they tek the money from. The police only seh they got back $4,000 and they put she to sit on the bench. I tell them I gon talk about this in court.”
He was released a short while after.
It was reported in the Kaieteur News that a female shopper had parked her motorcycle on Orange Walk and left for the market.
A policeman in civilian clothes saw the two men breaking into the storage compartment and removing a passport, cash and other documents.
He reportedly challenged them, firing a warning shot in the air.
The man said that he immediately went to the Police Complaints Authority at Eve Leary where a ‘nice’ man sent him to Brickdam.
“One policeman tell me to get out. I don’t like the satisfaction that I get there.”
According to Alexander, he lost two days work and somebody now has to pay him for losses.
