President Jagdeo gives $2M for team to travel to Barbados event
Described by President of the Guyana Amateur Boxing Association, Steve Ninvalle, as ‘Amateur Boxing’s best cornerman’ President Bharrat Jagdeo has again shown his support for sports with a $2M donation to ensure a team of boxers and officials travel to Barbados for the Ronald Wilson Memorial Tournament.
The event runs from November 30 to December 4 with the local contingent scheduled to leave on Wednesday. The team of seven boxers and four officials are: Stefan Gouveia (light weight), Imran Khan (bantamweight), Richard Williamson (flyweight), Ron Smith (welterweight) and Laured Stewart (welterweight) among the elite fighters, while Delon Charles (novice/bantamweight) and lone female Renita David (featherweight) are the juniors making the trip. The officials – Lennox Daniels (Manager), Terrence Poole (Coach), Ramona Agard and Keith Campbell are the Referee/Judges.
The elite fighters are from the pool of fighters GABA have in training for next year’s Olympic Games in London, while the two juniors will get valuable exposure. Coach Poole said he was very pleased with the intervention of President Jagdeo which has made their participation possible. He stated that this is a good opportunity for the boxers who are part of the ‘road to London’ initiative to show their readiness for top flight competition and assess where they are. Poole noted that they have an excellent opportunity to shine and he expects a very good showing from them.
Ninvalle was full of praise for President Jagdeo. He informed that their appeal to the corporate sector fell well short and he was forced to seek the assistance of His Excellency, who has a penchant for offering tangible support of sports in Guyana. Ninvalle noted that he and team were very happy at the response they received from the Head of State, noting that boxing has a special place with him.
The President is known to be present at several boxing cards and was there with the residents of Albouystown when Andrew ‘Sixhead’ Lewis won that elusive World title for Guyana and fittingly rewarded him.
The GABA boss also disclosed that this competition will give the fighters valuable exposure and training as they look ahead to the Olympic box off and a place at the London Games. He stated that while the pro am cards have given the opportunity for competition preparation, overseas engagements like these against foreign fighters is much more valuable and what is needed for their optimum preparation.
Ninvalle informed that GABA had wanted to send 13 boxers but some are military personnel and are constrained by work commitments due to the current national elections tomorrow, so they had to scale down the team. He said that he is looking forward for the team to be good ambassadors and represent Guyana well, bringing home the top medals from these games.
