The Private Sector Commission (PSC) has expressed disgust over the state of affairs of the Mayor and City Council and the need for constant interventions by businesses to keep Georgetown clean.
According to Ramesh Dookhoo, Chairperson, PSC, “We want to stop making interventions into the City Council. It is not our responsibility. My responsibility is to pay taxes. The City Council’s responsibility is to give me something in return.”
On many occasions the business sector has had to pool its resources to help the cash strapped City Council execute its duties.
He emphasised that issues relating to the City need to be put into perspective with actors executing the roles they have been elected to do.
The Private Sector Commission (PSC) has expressed optimism that the long-awaited Local Government Elections may be held soon, having had commitments from political parties contesting the General and Regional Elections.
“We have said to more than one of the political parties contesting that office that we want a commitment on Local Government elections and it seems as though we have a commitment.”
Dookhoo asserted that the hosting of Local Government Elections will allow the creation of new towns and cleaning out the City.
According to Kumar Ramnauth, President, of Georgetown Chamber of Commerce, Georgetown is hemorrhaging and for over two years the Private Sector Commission and Georgetown Chamber of Commerce have been lobbying Government and engaging political parties for Guyana to have Local Government elections.
Ramnauth noted, “I think the political parties have recognized this and who are suffering are the business people. Not so long ago when the garbage collectors stopped collecting garbage, the private sector got 12 trucks and gave them to the City Council to pick up garbage for about two to three weeks. We cannot continue to do that. We are paying to collect our taxes.”
He stressed that the body expects the City to function effectively and to provide services needed by the business community.
“The City has a way of saying business people owe taxes and we have asked the City on many occasion to provide us with a list. Up to now we have not got a correct list. The last list provided was incorrect. It is not that people don’t want to pay taxes; they want the services.”
