In wake of recent statements made by A Partnership For National Unity’s Prime Ministerial Candidate Rupert Roopnaraine about National Communication Network being dubbed the National Criminal Network the company has expressed its deep concern and disappointment at continuous attacks.
“The latest such attack came from its Prime Ministerial Candidate Dr Rupert Roopnaraine at the party’s Vreed-en-Hoop meeting last evening. This was followed through with a bold front page headline in today’s Kaieteur News.
“It is also not the first time such description of the network was used by the leadership of APNU. NCN believes that such actions will not contribute to a peaceful and successful conduct of the Elections”.
The statement added that all Guyanese must be concerned that such statements are coming on the eve of the elections and they do have the potential of being violent in nature against NCN personnel who will be required to perform their duties as reporters, producers, announcers, camerapersons, technicians, etc. Indeed several of our staff members have already been subjected to threats and harassment.
“The majority of staff members are young people of varying backgrounds, ethnicity, and persuasions and to be subjected to this sort of labeling is not only unfair, but damaging to their professionalism and reputation. Moreover, their physical safety is compromised.”
“The main bone of contention by the APNU appears to be the number of advertisements aired on behalf of the PPP/C. I want to assure all that with reference to political programming and advertising, these are done on a commercial basis. There is evidence to verify this.”
NCN said that in addition, instead of taking up the free airtime offer and reduced advertising rates, APNU chooses to inject a lot of red herrings and launch these public attacks.
“It should be noted that the other three parties contesting the elections are making full use of the offer and are not complaining.
“Again, we wish to condemn such attacks on the entity and its employees and to request the APNU to desist from inflammatory statements and to publicly apologise for this type of behaviour.”
It was also noted in the statement that NCN will be bringing this recent attack to the attention of GECOM and the Law Enforcement Agencies. It is also calling on the Elections Observers to take note.
