Magistrate Nyasha Hatmin yesterday morning remanded to prison a Non Pariel, East Coast Demerara man
who was charged in connection with the beating of three youths last Wednesday.
Nazeem Abdool, was charged indictably with unlawful wounding, committed on Mark Lustal, 16; Shaquille Answick, 17; and Lancelot Griffith, 16; all of Company Road, Buxton.
He was also charged with assault causing actual bodily harm.
Abdool was one of five persons who were arrested on Thursday for the incident which took place at Non Pariel.
Kaieteur News understands that Abdool was positively identified by the victims.
However, the other suspects were released after they had given statements denying their involvement.
Late yesterday afternoon, three more men were arrested and charged for unlawful wounding in connection with the same incident.
They are Parmanand Ramnauth of Enterprise, and Kulwant Sewnarine and Jeremy Sarju both of Non Pareil. They too were remanded by Magistrate Hatmin.
Kaieteur News understands that investigators returned to the area where the incident took place just after noon accompanied by one of the victims, who pointed out the other suspects.
On Wednesday the youths who were carrying out construction work in the area had gone into a shop to purchase when the owner who said that she was robbed on October 12, last, panicked and summoned help by shouting ‘thief’.
Several persons responded and cornered the young men and gave them a sound thrashing before the police arrived.
Attorney for Abdool, Jerome Khan, expressed surprise that the magistrate refused bail to his client.
He said that while he respects the Magistrate’s decision, his client should have been granted his pre trial liberty since both of the offences under which he is charged, are bailable.
“We have to be careful that people don’t read too much into this matter because of this political season. Things like this happen every day throughout Guyana,” Khan stated.
He said that the police acted with indecent haste in this matter.
“They are driven by considerations that are not law enforcement considerations,” Khan said, adding that the police have charged the wrong man.
“My client is innocent. They (police) don’t even have his right name, they picked up the wrong guy,” Khan told this newspaper.
All the accused are to return to court next week Wednesday.
Khan has indicated that he will be approaching the high court to secure bail for his client before the next court hearing.
