A monetary donation of £1,000 was handed over to the Administrator of the Cheddi Jagan Research Centre, Mr. Mohamed from Ms. Pasty Downey and Mr. Fiaz of the Cheddi Jagan Memorial Trophy Cricket Competition (UK) recently at the centre.
In the midst of the presentation, Downey mentioned that there has been a tremendous increase in attendance to the Memorial Cricket Day since Dr Jagan’s death in 1997, “The Cheddi Jagan Memorial Cricket Day was set up for the last Sunday in July following Comrade Cheddi’s death in 1997. The first year we have about fifty people, now we have thousands of Guyanese in the Diasporas attending and with that we are committed in giving an annual donation from this event to the Cheddi Jagan Research Centre,” she said.
She further added that they have recognized Comrade Janet Jagan alongside Cheddi in the CJMRC competition and realized that the foundation built by Dr Jagan in Guyana is strong and as a result there must a continuation on what has started. “We now recognize Comrade Janet alongside Comrade Cheddi in the competition. Comrade Cheddi has built a strong foundation for Guyana and this foundation must continue to be built upon.”
Ms. Downey thanked Kamal Persaud and the UK Diaspora for the hard work and commitment in ensuring that the day was a success.
The Chairman of the Cheddi Jagan Researcher Centre appreciated the superb donation that was made by Ms. Pasty Downey and Mr. Fiaz of the Cheddi Jagan Memorial Trophy Cricket Competition (UK) as it would assist in keeping the legacy of Dr. Jagan alive.
