Sasenarine Singh, a senior official of the Alliance For Change, has sued the Guyana National Newspapers Limited, publishers of the Guyana Chronicle and the Sunday Chronicle, in excess $50M.
Singh has retained, as his attorneys, Clarence Hughes, Richard Fields, Richard Stoby and Nigel Hughes, among others.
The lawsuit stems from an article which was published and reprinted on more than one occasion in the Guyana Chronicle alleging that Singh while employed at the National Milling Company (Guyana) Limited, was involved in corrupt practices.
The article was based on allegations made by one Fizal Ally.
Ally had stated that he first met Singh in 1991, while he was employed at the National Milling Company and was responsible for the allocation of flour for wholesale distribution.
“At that time, I was one of the largest distributors of flour in Guyana…I therefore interacted with Mr. Singh on an almost daily basis as he was responsible for the quantity of flour to be allocated to me,” according to Ally
According to Singh the articles were published while he was not in the country and as such he waited until he arrived in Guyana to file the suit.
