Last year, it was Jeremy Miller who upset the odds when he beat the then
dominant Phillip Squires in straight sets to claim his first Pegasus Open title.
One year later, four times champion Phillip Squires turned the tables to defeat top seed Jeremy Miller in three sets 2-6, 6-3, 6-4 and reclaim the Men’s Singles crown.
The first set was all Miller as he produced groundstroke winners and played exceptional tennis to put pressure on Squires to claim the opening set.
The second set started off with both players trying to seize the initiative.
Tied at 2-2, Squires hit three big first serves to easily hold and then upped the pressure on Miller by hitting deep returns.
Despite being under immense pressure from the unrelenting Squires, Miller came up big, saving two break points when down 15-40, one by running down a lob and the other with a scorching inside out forehand.
Squires then changes tactics and begun to serve and volley which was clearly a better option against Miller, who chipped his service returns and he easily held serve.
Squires then secured the vital break to go ahead 5-3.
Miller, however, would not go down and egged on by the big crowd put Squires serve under pressure as he began to generate power with his forehand and kept Squires on the defensive.
An excellent point by Miller gave him a 40-30 advantage and break point, but he was unable to convert, before Squires went on to take the set 6-3 and force the decider. The third set was of the highest quality as the two top seeds were unrelenting in their determination to claim the title.
Miller saved three break points on his first service game and despite tiring was able to stay with Squires whose tactic was to mixed drop shots with some exquisite lobs that worked well for him.
Tied at 3-3, Miller made a big effort and eventually went ahead 4-3 after some gruelling rallies which had the crowd on its feet.
Squires serve and volley game then allowed him to hold easily as Miller mishit or hit soft returns which he was able to capitalise on easily.
The ninth game turned out to the game decider and it was a marathon, featuring five deuces as Miller fought desperately to hold unto his title.
Two costly backhand errors by Miller allowed Squires to go ahead 5-4 and allowed him to serve out the set to recapture the title he previously held in 2009.
