Dear Editor,
The East Coast Jaguars net run rate was a non-issue in determining qualification for the Carib beer/ Pepsi 20/20 competition.
The East Coast team failed to present themselves and a team list as required at the scheduled start of the game, despite being asked to do so, the manager, coach and some players were absent as late as half an hour after the scheduled start time.
In fact, the coach was not present at any official meeting or the preliminary games including this rained out match. The team manager is yet to be declared to the tournament organizers.
Both games scheduled for that day were abandoned due to inclement weather; every effort was made for play by the umpires and officials. Both games were called off by the umpires present and not by the tournament officials.
Earlier in the said day the captain of South Essequibo arrived late and was removed from the team list presented by manager Ryan Hercules, despite his presence before the actual start of the match.
The appointed manager of the East Coast team has not been in contact with me or the GCB; I received calls from Mr. Narvan Singh who was not the manager and as such I was unwilling to discuss matters pertaining to the competition with him.
Efforts to contact Mr. Jewan Persaud were futile; I contacted the Demerara Cricket Board and informed them of my decision to penalize the indiscipline of the East Coast squad.
They affirmed the need to stamp out the malaise and indicated they would also take disciplinary action at a further date.
The fact that the East Coast Cricket Board refused to participate in this competition further complicated the cohesion and communication with among the East Coast Squad.
Three East Coast players were included in the East bank team; however Mr. Lall was unable to secure release from work and Mr. Krishna Deoserran inexplicably was absent and efforts to contact him have been in vain. Mr. Zaheer Mohammed participated in the super eight match for East Bank.
The Carib beer /Pepsi competition is a national competition with clearly stated aims, there remains no place for indiscipline or cheap politicking and indeed it will not be tolerated. Strict adherence to the rules of the competition needs to be followed for the proper development of a professional league.
I am always available to discuss this matter further with the East Coast Squad but, so far, have received no official complaint from anyone and can only respond to what I have read in the print media.
Robin Singh,
Tournament Director
