A Canadian citizen was yesterday jailed for four years after he was caught attempting to smuggle cocaine through the Cheddi Jagan International Airport.
He appeared at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court where he was convicted and fined $30,000 for trafficking in narcotics.
Nicolas Joshua Prince, who appeared before Acting Chief Magistrate, Priya Sewnarine-Beharry, was found with one kilo of cocaine at the time of his arrest at the airport. The man, who gave his address as Toronto, pleaded guilty to the charge.
The court heard that on November 8th, ranks from the Customs Anti-Narcotics Unit (CANU) were on duty at the airport where they conducted a search on the defendant. They discovered 75 pellets, suspected to be cocaine, in the luggage of the defendant.
Prince admitted that he had swallowed 24 pellets. He was arrested and charged.
Under guard by police, he was taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital where on November 19th, he excreted 24 pellets of cocaine.
Prince, in asking for leniency, said that he is a student and currently lives in a shelter.
He also said that he needed money and was planning to purchase a home.
