The 77th Birthday Inter Ward, Street and Village Knockout 16-team football fiesta for Mayor Hamilton Green
will this evening at the Georgetown Football Club ground, Bourda and keen competition is anticipated with several exciting matches scheduled.
The teams will be battling for the Body Max and International Guyanese entertainer Eddie Grant sponsored respective $200,000 and $100,000 first and second prizes.
Games are set to last 30 minutes each. The no offside rule would be in effect, adding to the competitiveness and excitement of the event. A game ending in a stalemate after the 30 minutes will go straight to the sudden death penalty shootout mode.
Coordinator Lennox Arthur noted that Rules 5 and 19 will be in full force and teams should take particular note. Rule 5 concerns teams arriving one hour before the start of their respective games, while Rule 19 notes that teams arriving late for their games will forfeit those games, handing the other team present a walkover.
He also informed that the tournament will be officiated by referees from the Guyana Football Referees Council and players are free to represent any team of their choice once they are registered with that team.
The opening round of action this evening starting at 6:00pm will see Second Street Alexander Village vs Timehri Panthers, Western B vs Diamond, Charlotte Street vs Kuru Kururu Warriors, North East La Penitence vs Kuru Kururu Lions, Broad Street vs Alexander Street, Agricola vs Mojo’s Lions, West Front Road vs Grove and Regga Boys vs Festival City.
Among some of the stars on show tonight would be Shemroy Arthur, Orville Milton, Jimmy Gravesande and Kerwin Benjamin.
Play continues Thursday from the same times with Alexander Village vs Wales, Brave Hearts vs Uitvlugt, Leopold Street vs Goed Fortuin, Mocha vs Stewartville, Sandoval Street vs West Side All Stars, Laing Avenue vs Castello Schemers, Western A vs Den Amstel and War Mongers vs Lima Dam.
Among the sponsors are; Body Max Gym who donated the first prize, Guyanese International star Eddie Grant who put up the second prize, BK International, Chris Fernandes, New Thriving Restaurant, Sterling Products, Winston Rambarran, Nigel’s Super Market, Dr. Colin Watson, Crown Mining, Farfan and Mendes, James Bovell of the Business School and Clem Duncan Snr of Swansea.
