Several areas completed their zones of the Ministry of Culture Youth and Sport 7:15 Inter Block football tournament over the weekend setting the stage for an intriguing finale to the tournament and the fight for the $150,000 first prize.
Up at Linden, One Mile overcame Amelia’s Ward Back Scheme 2-1 to clinch their zone and the right to represent Linden in the finale. Seon Brewley and Trevor Tudor led the winners, while Travis Waterton scored for the Ward side.
Earlier, Wisroc went down to Amelia’s Ward 2-3 on penalties, One Mile beat Christianburg Section B 1-0 on penalties in the semifinal rounds. The preliminary rounds resulted in Wisroc beating Block 22 2-0, Amelia’s Ward Back Scheme going past Front Scheme 2-1, Cinderella City edged South Lane 1-0 and Back Scheme beating Cinderella City 5-0.
On the West of Demerara, Stewartville defeated Young Guns 3-0 on penalties in the final to book their spot on the national playoff.
In the earlier rounds, Road Warriors of Den Amstel were edged by Young Guns of Uitvlugt 0-1. Beavers got past Stewartville All Stars 4-3 on penalties. In the semis, Young Guns beat Beavers 403 on penalties and Stewartville brushed aside Middle Street 4-0.
Moving to the east and Berbice, Hopetown will represent the West Berbice area following their 1-0 victory over Calcutta in the deciding contest.
Hopetown overcame Ithaca 1-0, while Calcutta beat Belladrum/Airy Hall 6-2 in the preliminary contest.
The competition continues. The winners of each area will collect a cash prize apart from the right to battle for the overall crown.
