Minibus driver Azeem Wajid was killed on Saturday after slamming into a paddy truck on the Number Two Village Public Road, West Coast Berbice.
According to reports, Wajid was heading to Georgetown in minibus BLL 285, when he lost control of the vehicle and slammed into a truck which was transporting paddy to East Berbice. It was a head- on collision and reports suggest that there were no other passengers at the time in the bus.
The driver of GBB 9577 was pinned in the cab and had to be removed with assistance from members of the public. He was rushed to a city hospital.
The incident occurred sometime after 08:00 hrs on Saturday. Residents say that the bus driver was speeding.
The mangled remains of the bus and a trail of gasoline on the road as well as dislodged parts from the truck and bus were strewn on the roadway.
Meanwhile, just a few yards away a pick-up toppled over before coming to a screeching stop after the driver lost control of the vehicle. He escaped with minor injuries.
