Alliance For Change (AFC) founder member Sheila Holder has died after a prolonged battle with ill health. An AFC statement last night said that Mrs. Holder passed away yesterday evening in New York with her family by her side.
“It is with deep sadness that the Alliance For Change regrets to announce the passing of its founder leader, Sheila Holder…The AFC extends its profound sympathy to her husband and family at this moment of their great and tragic loss,” the statement said.
“Sheila Holder was a patriot who embodied the attributes of grace and service. She was a fierce fighter for a better and unified Guyana and worked tirelessly to promote ‘change’ in her dear Guyana.
“We send our heartfelt condolences to Noel, her children and family in this time of grief. Sheila was the embodiment of dignity, fairness and equality. She was an upstanding citizen and an uncompromised politician and words cannot express how much she will be missed in the party and in Guyana,” a deeply saddened AFC leader Raphael Trotman said.
AFC Presidential Candidate, Khemraj Ramjattan said: “I extend on behalf of the Party my deep condolences to Noel and the family.
This is the most distressing news we could have gotten about our dear sister and fellow leader. She was a beacon of inspiration for all of us in the party.
We take heart that her legacy will live on in the AFC forever and we know she will want us to continue to fight for justice and a better Guyana for all Guyanese. We will honour her life’s work by re-doubling our own work for a better Guyana.”
The statement said that a Book of Condolence will be opened at the Party’s Head Office from 3pm tomorrow Monday November 21. Funeral arrangements will be announced shortly.
PPPC Presidential Candidate Donald Romotar also expressed shock at Mrs. Hosder’s passing, while expressing condolences on behalf of his party.
“On behalf of the PPPC I would like to express my deepest sympathy to Mrs. Holder’s family and friends. From a personal level we had a good relationship despite our political differences and I am saddened by her loss.”
And A Partner For National Unity Presidential Candidate David Granger said he felt a great sense of loss on hearing of Mrs. Holder’s passing.
“On behalf of APNU I would like to express deep condolences to the Mrs. Holder’s family and the AFC.
“Mrs. Holder was one of the founding members; one of the three leaders from the start. We are aware of her contributions to the political debate and the role of women in our country. We felt that she had more to contribute to the society after the upcoming elections.”
Initially chosen as the party’s prime ministerial candidate for the upcoming elections, Mrs. Holder was forced to withdraw from this position a few months ago due to ill health.
She also had to be rushed to a city hospital last February after taking ill.
