Upper Demerara dethroned North Georgetown in the 2011 National Schools Cycling, Swimming and Track and Field Championships to win the overall ‘Champion of Champions’ title on Friday at the Guyana National Stadium in the culmination of the event.
Upper Demerara, District 10, took the track and field championships from defending champions, North Georgetown who had placed third behind second placed, Corentyne. Up to Kaieteur Sport press time late Friday night, the overall title decision was still pending.
North Georgetown had won the swimming championships on the opening day. The results from the cycling and teachers’ championships were necessary to determine the overall champions. The two teams had been locked in keen rivalry over the past decade.
Corentyne won the cycling championships with 213 points with Upper Demerara placing second with 178 points. West Demerara, District 3, was third with 164 points with South Georgetown on 158 points for fourth and East Georgetown on 118 points for fifth. North Georgetown (72 points) was seventh in the cycling championships behind Corentyne on 93 points.
Meanwhile in the teachers’ championships, North Georgetown won with 145 points with Bartica in second on 137 points and New Amsterdam third on 135 points. East Georgetown took fourth on 119 points as Upper Demerara finished fifth on 101 points.
Hence, by virtue of their better placing in the four championships than any of the competing teams, Upper Demerara amassed 67 points from the cycling, swimming, track and field and the teachers’ championships to win the National Schools’ overall title.
North Georgetown was second with 63 points with East Georgetown in third place on 51 points and Bartica fourth with 50 points. Corentyne rounded off the top five competing districts with 48 points. The districts are expected to collect their prizes on Wednesday.
Owed to the late conclusion of the competition Friday night, most of the core presentations were incomplete.
