Adams, Lopes win Men’s 35 Doubles, Lowden, Persaud take 45’s title
On Friday evening at the Pegasus Tennis Open, three teams claimed titles in the Doubles categories as
the tournament winds down to an end after two weeks of action. In the first matchup coach Shelly Ramdyhan teamed up with defending Men’s singles champion Jeremy Miller to turn back the challenge of Phillip Squires/Krystal Sukra 6-3 6-4 in the Mixed Doubles final with some smart tennis and deft volleying.
The pair came out on top of the competitive category where all teams dropped at least a set in the tournament. Ramdyhan/Miller had to scrape pass Shawna Gentle/Gavin Lewis in the semi-finals and Squires/Sukra had to come from a set down to defeat Aruna Ramrattan/Leyland Leacock in their semi-final encounter.
In the other doubles finals played, Carlos Adams/Andre Lopes coasted to an easy 6-1 6-1 victory to cop the Men’s 35 Doubles title when they outplayed Berbicians Mario Niamatali/ Anthony Ameerally who had earlier taken out the top seeds in the semi-finals. Adams and Lopes, who are two of the top players in the Men’s 35 division, proved to be a cut above the competition as they won all their matches decisively. They are on course for a showdown in the 35 Singles competition after Adams used his experience to negate the effectiveness of Gilbert Barckoy’s game in his singles semi-final match and coasted to a 6-1 6-2 win. Lopes is scheduled to play Rudy Grant in his semi-final encounter.
Loosing semi-finalists in the Men’s 35 Doubles category Godfrey Lowden/Omar Persaud exacted some revenge when they breezed to a 6-2 6-0 victory over Steve David-Longe/Albert Madramootoo to capture the 45 Doubles title.
Yesterday’s matches saw the Men’s and Women’s semi-finals being played with Jeremy Miller taking on Gavin Lewis, Phillip Squires against Leyland Leacock, Carol Humphrey vs Aretta Dey and Shawna Gentle taking on Nicola Ramdyhan.
