-Charlestown United concede walkover
After producing two fine performances that resulted in wins in their last two encounters, Kitty-based Northern Rangers slid to a 2-0 defeat to Santos as play in the GFA/ President Beer Super League continued on Friday evening, at the GFC ground.
On target for the winners were Lerone Charles and Jermaine Bamfield who netted in the 28th and 40th minutes respectively in a matchup that saw the losers dominate the proceedings, but poor finishing resulted in them being defeated after creating the majority of the chances to score.
In the opening encounter, Charlestown United conceded a walkover to Police after they failed to show up for the engagement.
The feature clash saw Northern Rangers in offensive mode from the beginning and should have taken an early lead when a cross from the left flank eluded three defenders, but the Rangers striker failed to capitalise, perhaps more surprised by the opportunity that presented itself and instead was slow to react causing the opposition defence to recover and clear the ball into touch for a corner.
The ensuing corner kick taken from the right side was a beauty it swerved menacingly, evading valiant attempts by a host of defenders to clear it, before crashing into the upright and rebounding into play.
Despite continuing to dominate the play, Northern Rangers was once again guilty of squandering more chances and it did not take the more technically organised Santos unit to capitalise when Charles tapped in from close range off a goal mouth scrimmage, beating the goalkeeper to his left.
Santos took a slim 1-0 lead into the break.
On the resumption, Northern Rangers continued to dominate possession, but as was the case in the opening period, poor finishing was the order of the day.
Once again they paid the price when Bamfield ran on to a clinical pass, dribbled one defender, before placing a perfect shot past the advancing goalkeeper in the far corner.
It was the ideal finish to a wonderful build up between three players that resulted in a 2-0 advantage which they held onto until the end.
Meanwhile, the competition continues today with a triple header at the same venue.
In the first game, Black Pearl takes on Flamingo from 16:00 hrs and that will be followed by the clash between Houston Stars and Northern Rangers from 18:00 hrs, while the feature matchup will pit club champions Alpha ‘the Hammer’ United versus hosts GFC from 20:00 hrs.
