The Skeldon Community Centre ground is approximately 100 miles from the City and is one of four First- Class
cricket grounds in Berbice along with Albion, Blairmont and Rose Hall Canje.
Yesterday in glorious sunshine, a fair size crowd watched as left-handed opener Sewnarine Chattergoon fashioned a magnificent 107 decorated with eight fours and four sixes to lead Church’s Chicken Corentyne Titans to a comprehensive 142-run victory against Carib Foods East Bank Pirates at Guyana’s most Eastern Cricket venue.
Mario’s Pizza West Berbice had earlier defeated Hotel Tower West Demerara Cavaliers by five wickets in the opening match of the day’s double header as the first two semi-finalists of the Guyana Cricket Board’s (GCB) Carib/Pepsi Big Smash t20 national cricket competition were known.
The other two teams advancing to Friday’s semi-finals at Albion will be known today when Gizmos & Gadgets Pitbulls face the Noble House Young Conquerors from 09:00hrs and the President’s X1 battle North Essequibo Warriors from 13:00hrs in a double header at the Everest ground in Georgetown.
Playing in the afternoon game yesterday, the 30-year-old Chattergoon who has played four Tests and 18 ODIs for the West Indies stroked the ball with consummate ease on a slow but good pitch for batting after he was sidelined for last month’s Regional Super50 tournament with a shin injury.
The Albion player, who averages just 16 in his 11 t20 matches for Guyana, including three in South Africa last year, put the bowlers to the sword to join Elton Baker as the competition’s century-makers as the Royston Crandon led Corentyne side scored 201-4 off their 20 overs .
West Indies left-hander Narsingh Deonarine continued his good form after missing selection on the Guyana 50-over team due to fitness reasons. The Albion left-hander scored 40 while his club mate Jonathon Foo clobbered two sixes and a four in a cameo 25 as the hapless bowlers from the East Bank team where flayed to all parts of the ground. Anthony Bramble (9) was the other batsman dismissed.
Left-arm spinner Charles Ramson Junior removed both Chattergoon and Foo but the Everest spinner who represented the West Indies Lawyers team recently, finished with 2-57 from four expensive overs.
New Amsterdam/Canje player Seon Hetymer had 1-20 from two overs for the East Bank line-up, while former Guyana under-15 off-spinner Jagdesh Bishun took 1-22 from two overs.
A finger injury to First-Class off-spinner Zaheer Mohamed early in the contest was a severe blow to the East Bank team’s bowling attack and when they replied they were bundled out for 59-9 in 15.2 overs.
Kevin Austin top-scored with 21, while Ryan Ramdass, who played his only Test match in Sri Lanka in 2005, was the only other batsman for the East Bank side to reach double figures with 14.
National under-19 All-rounder Clinton Pestano had 4-18 from his four overs and got back up from left-arm spinner Mark Lionel (2-2 from 4 overs) and Deonarine (1-8 from 2 overs).
In the first game, Balram Samaroo scored an unbeaten 47 but only Khemraj Mahadeo (14) of the other batsmen reached double figures as Hotel Tower West Demerara Cavaliers crashed to 101 all out from 19.5 overs after they were invited to bat first in the 09:00hrs game.
Off-spinner Krishundat Ramoo continued his good run with the ball with 3-12 from 4 overs, while Steffon Adams (2-15 from 4), Eon Abel (2-23 from 4), former West Indies under-19 pacer Keon Joseph (1-14 from 4) and Test pacer Brendon Bess (1-32 from 4) were the wicket takers for the West Berbice line-up.
Keith Fraser hit a fighting undefeated 28 and national t20 opener Richard Ramdeen 21 while Karamdat Bissoondial (18) and Romain Boodram (13) also chipped in to see the West Berbice unit to victory.
Samaroo, a former national youth player, followed up his 47 with 2-20 from 4 overs while Budhan Baksh (2-17 from 4) and Andre Percival (1-21 from 4) were the other wicket-takers in a losing cause as both Berbice teams progressed to the semis.
According to the GCB the winners of the semi-finals on Friday will clash under lights in the Final at Albion on December 3 and a feature match, which is likely to involve International Star Chris Gayle and other overseas players, will be played before the final.
