With more than 189 bird species in the Botanical Gardens alone, Guyana has officially designated that location a Bird Sanctuary yesterday, to the benefit of bird watchers around the world.
The plaque declaring the Botanical Gardens a Bird Sanctuary was unmasked to a mixed audience of the National Parks Commission, the Guyana Amazon Tropical Bird Society, nature lovers and other curious individuals.
Guyana as a whole has approximately 860 bird species that have attracted tourists and individuals such as Mr. Randy Jourdain, Acting President for Guyana Tropical Bird Society, who briefly described the growing interest for bird watching in Guyana.
There is a multitude of birds to look for in the Gardens, but to name a handful, there are the Red Billed Toucan, Toco Toucan, woodpeckers, parrots, and the various Macaws. These are a pleasant sight to behold.
According to Mr. John Caesar, Chairman for the National Parks Commission, even in South American terms Guyana’s biodiversity is one of the highest and serves as an important ecosystem. He added that bird watching might even lower the instances of domestic violence.
Minister of Tourism, Manniram Prashad, said that more than 51 million persons in the USA have attended a bird watching trip. He continued that Guyana as a birding hotspot has become one of the top birding spots in the world.
“We attended the British Bird Watching Fair, one of the largest bird watching fairs, in an attempt to promote Destination Guyana, according to Minister Prashad.
And there is the Christmas season. He revealed that Delta would be introducing a 767 flight to ease the back up during the holiday seasons and that a four-lane highway will be built to Cheddi Jagan International Airport.
He added that a new airport is to be built in two to three years, with the money already on the table. This programme includes a runway adjustment from 7,200 yards to 10,500 yards to accommodate all international flights.
